Installing click fit

Fitting our click fit flooring

Preparation

Fitting engineered click fit flooring from Real Oak Floors is easy to do with the following simple steps. With click-fit flooring a floor can be laid in only a few hours. Our click fit floor boards can be laid directly onto any clean, dry flat and stable surface. The floor must first be levelled to no more than 2mm per metre. It is also important to check the humidity of the subfloor, humidity allowance varies based on the sub floor material. The subfloor humidity should be no more than:

  • Anyhydrite - 0.5%
  • Concrete - 2%
  • Wood - 8%
Prior to installing the flooring, the engineered floorboards must have first been stored inside their packaging for at least 48 hours in the room which the floor is to be laid.

Unpack the boards, paying attention to the colour and grain of each board as these will determine the appearance of the completed floor.

Tools

  1. Hammer
  2. Floorboard press
  3. Wooden rule or measuring tape
  4. Hand saw or electric saw
  5. Wooden wedges or spacers
  6. Unika Hammering block

For underlay we recommend the use of natural materials such as corrugated cardboard, cork mats.
Decide which direction you intend to lay the floorboards, taking consideration in to the shape of the room.

It is a good idea to lay the floor along the length of the room where possible. After choosing your flooring direction, measure the width of the room. Deduct the width of expansion gaps (usually 2 x 10 mm) from the measured width and divide the resulting value by 207 mm, i.e. the width of one board. It will allow you to calculate how many rows of board must be installed and how to cut off the last row of boards. If the last row of boards is to be narrower than 70 mm, you should also cut off the first row.

Start off by laying the subfloor keeping the edges in contact with each other with the exception of of natural sub floor slabs which require a gap of 2mm.

Lay the first row of floorboards with the tongues pointing to the wall, this will allow you to easily slide the next board in. Slide the next board into this one, using a hammer and floor press if necessary. Repeat this process until you have completed this first row of flooring.
Insert wooden wedges between the wall and boards to maintain an expansion joint. Keep the offcut from the board for starting the next row.

Begin laying the new row of boards with the offcut from the previous row.
Insert the tongue of a floorboard section into the groove of the laid boards and press it down by hand in the direction of the flooring. When positioned, gently hammer this board down with with a hammering block onto the laid boards. Repeat this on the next board, hammer the board from the shorter side using a floorboard press and join the fronts of the boards.

To remove gaps from the joints, use the floorboard press lengthwise on every subsequent row of boards from the front.
Insert the pressing wedges into the gaps along the walls.

If the floorboards are to surround an obstacle such as piping, mark and cut out a section on the flooring before installing the section. Be sure to leave an expansion gap.

Measure the last row of floorboards as precisely as possible.
If the boards are too wide they must be cut into narrower boards
Cut the boards down, keeping the tongued side intact. press this board down and again, leave an expansion gap. Make the gap at least 10mm wide.

Once the engineered wood flooring has been laid, remove all of the wedges and cover the expansion gap with skirting boards. As soon as the skirting is laid the floor is ready for use.

Additional information

When installing wooden floor boards it should be noted that for areas above 50 square metres, additional expansion gaps are required.
Do not lay this flooring in unheated rooms, open air or unsealed rooms.
Take care if laying over concrete, do not lay directly onto concrete, leave a gap for the air to circulate.
