The colour changes to a beautiful chocolate brown throughout the thickness of the whole board, this means that even if the board is sanded it will still retain its colour unlike a stained board. The cell walls of the wood are changed reducing its capacity to take up or give out moisture (the main reason for movement in use). As a result the boards are suitable for use with underfloor heating, and areas of variable humidity such as kitchens and bathrooms.
